We’re Headed to New York

I know I owe you a post about the Sacramento Delta. I know. I know. I’ve been working on it for a month.

But this is also the time of the year when we start planning for next year’s fieldwork and I didn’t want to keep the news from you one day longer.

Next summer we are headed to New York’s Hudson River.

We are starting somewhere above Ford Edward, possibly at the start of the Champlain Canal near Whitehall, New York. This would be 256 miles to the mouth of the Hudson and New York Harbor.

We considered starting in Burlington, Vermont which would add another 75 miles to our journey, but probably won’t to give us more time in New York City.

We’ll pass through the towns of Stillwater, Troy, Albany, Hudson, CatskillSaugerties, Kingston, Rhinebeck, Hyde Park (of FDR fame), Wappingers FallsNewburghBeaconCold Spring, West Point (yes, that West Point), PeekskillNyackYonkers (and many little towns in between), and finally through The Bronx and down the Harlem River to the East River and Brooklyn.

Currently, we are talking to galleries and museums about hosting a newly-expanded Secret History exhibition during our fieldwork period. Last year we had a month long exhibition at the Sacramento History Museum and we’re working on something similar in New York City.

So now we need your Hudson Valley contacts. The Hudson River: Environmental fights. Mahican, Munsee and Wappinger removals. Northern slavery, resistance, and abolition. Fights against the pervasive control of capital. Historical and contemporary conflict. Who do you know who shoulders the weight of that history today? Who lives the legacy of that struggle now?

UPDATE: We’ll be hosting pop-up exhibitions and talks in Kingston, Beacon, Haverstraw, Ossining, and possibly other cities. In Manhattan, we will be having a major exhibition at Whitebox Artist Space and artist talks at Brooklyn Waterfront Museum.
