Why Marietta endures inevitable floods

Several people told us that Marietta has never seriously considered a levee because it would separate the town and its people from its river roots.

People understand that floods come with the territory if you want to live in a river town. “We deal with it and move on.”

A sensible approach considering how often I’ve observed towns whose levees cut their connection to the river.

It reminded me of Davenport, Iowa who was similarly philosophical about floods and refused to build a levee of flood walls.
